Diminutive Gaming Peripheral
ARTWORK / 3D / LOW POLY

This is a tiny 3D model of Sony's Japan-only memory card peripheral for PlayStation, the Sony PocketStation. I originally made this model in 2021 to better familiarize myself with Blender, and to play with some PlayStation-style shaders in Unity. In 2024, I dusted off the model to play with another suite of PlayStation-style shaders for Blender.

The PocketStation was equipped with a 32×32 LCD screen, D-Pad, a single action button, an IR transmitter and receiver on top, and a speaker on the back. It would connect to the PlayStation via the memory card port and had all the functions of a standard memory card, with the addition of being able to play bite-sized games made specifically for the PocketStation. Many of these games would unlock additional content in their parent PlayStation game, or alter the game in some fashion.

Though the PocketStation was intended to release worldwide, Sony abandoned this plan sometime after its release, leaving it to remain exclusive to Japan. As a result, it was mainly supported by Japanese PlayStation games, with only a couple PlayStation titles releasing internationally with support intact. This device is often overlooked by PlayStation fans and emulation in general, and tends to be written off as a curiosity. I love the little thing though, it deserves more attention than it gets.

For those curious, the PlayStation emulator PCSX-Redux supports PocketStation memory cards. Pocket MuuMuu is a good place to start.
